The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County (DOH-Pinellas) urges owners of wells used for drinking water to have them tested once a year. Testing potable water for bacteria and other contaminants such as nitrates can ensure a safe water supply for the family.

While issues such as the recent sinkhole in Tarpon Springs may have affected nearby well owners, well-water safety is always a concern for anyone who owns a well in Pinellas County. Annual testing should be part of the well’s regular maintenance.

DOH-Pinellas’ Environmental Health staff can test wells to protect the quality of your drinking water. For a fee of $25, well owners can package water samples on their own to send to a certified laboratory. DOH-Pinellas staff can also come to your home to collect the samples for an extra fee. Well owners may also choose to have a private state-certified lab do the testing.
