Know Your Risk During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
September 29, 2023

Early detection is the key to successful diagnosis and treatment of breast and cervical cancer. That’s why the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County encourages residents to know their risk during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month observed each October.
Each year in the United States, nearly 264,000 women receive breast cancer diagnoses and 42,000 die of the disease. Though not as common, about one of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in men.
To help improve the chances of a positive outcome, the Florida Breast Cancer and Early Detection Program (BCCP) provides access to no-cost annual breast and cervical cancer screening exams, including mammograms, pap smears, pelvic exams, and clinical breast exams to women who are 50 to 64 years of age, low income, and are under or un-insured.
To participate in the program, call (727) 824-6917 to see if you qualify. Once approved, you will receive application information.
Some other important steps you can take would be to know your family’s history for breast cancer and to speak with your healthcare provider if something doesn’t look or feel right.
