The mission of the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County is to protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.
Within the Office of Health Promotion and School Health we work with local schools, government and community partners to keep people of all ages healthy and to implement policies, systems and environmental changes for all members of the community.
DOH-Pinellas Partnerships to Improve Community Health (Pinellas PICH)
Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH) is a three-year county wide initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support implementation of voluntary policy and systems changes to encourage healthy choices in physical activity and nutrition. The initiative will use evidence-based strategies to reduce the prevalence of obesity, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The national CDC PICH initiative includes approximately 39 communities throughout the United States, and funds population-wide strategies to change the environments in which people live, work, learn and play. PICH is the newest generation in CDC's long history of community efforts to create and strengthen healthy environments that make it easier for people to make healthy choices and take charge of their health.
In Pinellas County, the grant funds will be used to work with cities, the county and other community partners to focus on neighborhoods that have more than 30 percent of residents with incomes below the Federal Poverty Level and more than a quarter of adults older than 25 without a high school education.
