Bioterrorism Emergency Planning Program

Bioterrorism happens when a virus, bacteria or other germ is used as a weapon to make people, plants, or animals sick. The Public Health Preparedness (PHP) program works to better prepare Pinellas County for a large scale public health emergency, like a bioterrorist attack.

The Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) is a grant program through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that gives money and assistance to plan for an emergency where medication or vaccinations are needed for all persons in Pinellas County.

In the event of a large scale public health emergency like an anthrax attack, we would ask the CDC for the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), which is a large pack of supplies, including medications, to help those who may be sick and keep those who are well from getting sick.

The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County plans for how the county would receive these medicines, how we would get the medicines to everyone who needs them (called mass prophylaxis), and how to keep everyone safe while we do so.

Please review our Emergency Planning information for more details.
